USA – Dogs Only

The Centre For Disease Control (CDC) in the United States of America has announced that a temporary ban for dogs directly from High Risk Rabies countries (which South Africa is one) has been imposed in effect from the 14th of July 2021.
It is our understanding this ban will be in place for a minimum of 12 months but is subject to change at the CDC’s discretion.

The new requirements for dogs are as follows:

  1. All pets must have an ISO 11784/85 compliant Microchip implanted.
Widely available and compliant brands in South Africa are: Virbac, Identipet, GetMeKnown & FiveStar ID.
  2. Valid and current vaccinations given when a pet is at least 3 months old (90 days of age) – to be given by a registered veterinarian.
Dogs are to have the following vaccinations: Rabies, Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Para-influenza and Kennel Cough.
  3. There is to be a minimum 30 days waiting period from the valid Rabies vaccination date and then the dog must have a blood sample taken for a Rabies Neutralizing Antibody Titre Test.
The blood test must be carried out at a CDC Approved Laboratory – South Africa’s ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in Pretoria is a recognised laboratory.
There will then be a further 3 month waiting period before travel is possible.
  4. Once a copy of the test report is available and at least 6 weeks (30 working days) prior to intended travel date, an Import Permit can be applied for.
It would be at the discretion of the CDC if the permit (and therefore entry into the USA) is granted.
Currently the CDC is likely to only consider imports for U.S. government employees or persons permanently relocating to the United States.
  5. Dogs would need to enter through an approved entry port and at this time, these are New York’s JFK Airport, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport & Los Angeles’s LAX Airport but will be reviewed regularly.
  6. A Veterinary Health Certificate with State Veterinarian endorsement is still to be done within days prior to departure.

Note:
All major airlines that operate flights from South Africa to various cities in the USA have now placed an embargo and cannot accept any bookings at this time.
