Into South Africa

Please note the following are a few of the regulations that apply for the import of dogs & cats to South Africa:

  1. All pets must arrive in South Africa as manifested cargo, through the cargo terminals of the airport.
    Arrival airports are Cape Town and Johannesburg
  2. All pets must be micro-chipped.
  3. Dogs must have valid vaccinations as follows:
    Rabies – at least 30 days old prior to departure but not older than 12 months.
    Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Para-influenza and Leptospirosis – at least 14 days old prior to departure but not older than 12 months.
    Kennel Cough – at least 14 days old prior to departure but not older than 12 months.
    Cats must have valid vaccinations as follows:
    Rabies – at least 30 days old prior to departure but not older than 12 months.
    Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia and Leukaemia – at least 14 days old prior to departure but not older than 12 months.
  4. Within 30 days prior to arrival in SA, Dogs must have 5 blood tests & 2 blood smears done.
    Your vet will need to take the blood samples & smears and send these to an approved laboratory for testing.
  5. Heartworm treatments
    All dogs must be treated for Heartworm prior to departure.
    All dogs must also travel with 6 months dose of Heartworm medications attached to their travel container/s.
  6. Veterinary Health Certificate
    For both Cats & Dogs this must be completed by a Government Veterinarian within 10 days prior to arrival.
  7. Import Permit
    Both Cats & Dogs require a Veterinary Import Permit from the South African Department of Agriculture.
    Cats & Dogs require their own permits.
  8. Dogs from certain countries like those in Asia & the Middle East will be required to enter quarantine on arrival in South Africa.
    The maximum quarantine period is 14 days.
    Quarantine is only available in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
